Lithophanes - A bit of "background"

Yeah, we make custom lithophanes at Aerocepts but what you didn't already know is where these came from.

In the early 1800s, a shield was needed to cover any open light; for example, the fireplace or a candlestick. It was practical but also "artsy". Lithophanes actually started in Europe, although discrepancy exists about which country truly initiated these. 

Prior to the invention of 3D printers, porcelain artists would hand craft these lithophanes. I don't know what I appreciate more - my 3D printer that can make a lithophane overnight while I'm sleeping OR the absolutely incredible artist who must have spent several days or weeks intricately cutting into porcelain to create a real image. Either way, the production process for this art has come so far and today we see all types of variants.
